As long as we have been together we have talked about doing a USA road trip for our honeymoon if we ever got married. So as soon as we were engaged, we knew there was no other consideration other than how and when.
We spent a considerable amount of time and research into doing it all ourselves. Just hiring a car or a RV and flying in/out of the South somewhere and then keeping it all very relaxed – perhaps booking a few air b&bs on the way so we knew where we’d be at certain points, then I discovered The American Road Trip company via a Guardian travel blog and decided they were the company for us. A quick call to the office and I knew we’d be booking with them. They take care of all the bookings and the beauty of it is all our hotels are booked – all of a very reasonable standard, the flights, the car hire and we can just sit back and look forward to the trip. Well if you were anybody other than control freak me you could. I of course had to research all the hotels, check we couldn’t get them cheaper ourselves and suggest a few alternative accommodations – like a quaint b&B in north carolina…. but all in all the price was very competitive for the service we’re getting.
I’ve had fun researching where to eat, where to drink and activities we can do in each area.
So far we’ve got a Zipline tour of the Smoky mountains planned with Navitat in Asheville.
Two amazing dinners planned in Asheville. I’m so excited about Asheville – I think it’s going to be right up our street! Food, craft beer, amazing atmosphere – what’s not to love! We are spending a weekend there before heading across to Gaitlinburg and Pigeon Forge. In Gaitlinburg we are planning on just chilling out, wandering, exploring and in Pigeon Forge we are still trying to book tickets for Dollywood and the Dixie Stampede– I’ve been on the phone every week trying to book their combo ticket for this event – 2016 tickets didn’t go on sale until start of January and 3 weeks in – they still haven’t set the prices! They keep on telling me ‘marketing have promised this week’ – marketing need to get a wriggle on if you ask me!!
Besides the frustration of trying to get our tickets booked – I am still super excited about this. Dollywood has been a bucket list destination of mine for years so I can not wait to finally get there and the Dixie Stampede just looks awesome! It’ll be fun to explore the town too – they even have a life size Titanic replica museum!
We then head through to Nashville for the weekend. We have tickets booked for the Grand Ol Opry, and are just planning on soaking up everything music city has to offer!
Graceland in Memphis and then down the mississippi taking in Clarksdale, Jackson and a weekend in Natchez
Before we got to New Orleans for several nights
We are staying at the Hotel Monteleone and plan to take an airboat tour of the swamps whilst we are in town. And then just soak up all the culture the city has to offer including the food and the drinks!
From there we go along to Pensacola in Florida, up to Montgomery before arriving back in Atlanta for a few days before flying back home.
It’s going to be such a fun trip. We have a packed schedule, we don’t want to miss a thing!
Have you any recommendations of things to do or see – have you been to any of these places?
